Taybeh

How the village got its name

Taybeh is a Palestinian Christian village. In Taybeh there are the ruins of a very ancient church of Saint George.

Taybeh used to be called ‘Ephraim’. It has this name in the Bible. Jesus visited Taybeh to escape and rest before his crucifixion. (John 11:54).

When the Muslim hero Salah al-Din came to drive the Crusaders out of Palestine the Christians in Taybeh invited him to stay with them.

Salah al-Din was delighted with how well the Christians in Taybeh treated him. At the time the village was still called Ephraim. The name Ephraim can mean nasty or bad. Salah al-Din said that the village should have a nicer name because the people living there were ‘good and kind’, Taybeen in Arabic. The village was renamed Taybeh.
